Gareth Murray honed his basketball skills as a cadet and a junior with his local basketball club, Arbroath Muscateers, in the north-east of Scotland. He then spent three years in the USA before returning to Scotland where he has been a regular with the Scottish Rocks since 2005. Gareth represented Scotland in the Commonwealth Games of 2006, in Melbourne, Australia.
